This pub is reported to be the second most haunted pub in the country,
yet it hasn’t got the credit a haunted pub should get.
Built around 1400 it was used as a hunting lodge and over the years it has seen many many changes
to its layout and structure, although the main part of the original structure still stands.
During these changes the pub has had its fare share of ghost sightings and reported paranormal activity.
Hardly surprising with so much renovation work over the years.
There has been a lot of stories and reports over the years of ghostly going on, one of which relates to
a ghost who likes to spend time in the ladies loo! It has been heard in the cubicles, it is known to try and unlock
the cubicle doors, and even unrolls the toilet paper onto the floor.
Another spirit likes to sit at a table in the snug part of the pub, after it was opened up to put the bar round. A pint would appear at the end of the night, and the landlord got upset with the staff for not cleaning up properly but the staff said they knew nothing about were this pint had come from. So the landlord tasted the pint one evening, and found it wasn’t a taste of any pint he sold at the pub. Curious by this he decided to leave the pint on the bar instead of clearing it up. In the morning when he came down stairs, the pint had been drunk. He decided to film the area with his CCTV but the phantom pint has not been seen since. Maybe a thirsty soul who waited patiently for his pint, had his fill and went on his merry way?
The old original fireplace is said to be the place one spirit likes to stand and look around as though he recognises the place, but not the furnishings. This spirit is said to be a Civil War Soldier from the time Oliver Cromwell ordered Sheffield Caste to be taken, and the Duke of Arundel (John Bright) took the castle. The soldier is said to be one of John Brights men.
Various pieces of furniture is also said to be haunted, one of which is an old side board which use to occupy a room upstairs, but when it got moved down stairs, it was always seen moved away from the wall and at the front of the stairs as if trying to get back to the room it was removed from. One woman describes the cabinet as etching towards her when she was in the cellar; she was in so much shock she ran upstairs in fright. To this day, the cabinet is still down there, trying to get back to its room where it belongs!
To this day the pub still has its ghosty visitors, but people have become more acustom to them. They still shock and surprise some unsuspected visitors. So remember, if you are wanting that quiet pint to wind down, you are not alone.

I was in the Queens Head on Friday, sitting on the bench in the dining area, far corner away from the bar, to the right of the fireplace. Unaccountably freezing cold, especially under the table. when other people were taking off fleeces, I felt as though my legs and feet were turning into blocks of ice.
I've not seen a ghost in the Queens Head but I thought you might be interested to know that my great grandparents used to run the pub. While living there my grandmother's sister, while playing in the yard, fell from a ladder, fractured her skull and later died. There is an inquest report in the local papers of that time.
