The Lantern Theatre, Sheffield.
-
The Lantern Theatre was built in the 1890's and is a grade II listed Victorian Theatre. It was originally called The Chalet Theatre when it was built. It was built as a personal Theatre by its owner, who was an industrialist, for his daughters who wanted to act. His name was William Webster who had his own silver works in Sheffield. The grounds sit the stables which are now used as the wardrobe and dressing room, and the Theatre itself. Over the years it has had an extension put on the front which houses the bar and reception area. William Webster himself lived in an adjoining property close to the Theatre, and the stables were used to house his horses and carriages.
Following the death of William Webster, the theatre fell into a state of disrepair and overgrown. In the 1950's an actress called Dilys Guite, rescued the Theatre and she and her small group embarked on restoring and re-building the Theatre. So pleased with her work, the owner at the time decided to dedicate the Theatre to the group in memory of his wife, and so the Dilys Guite Players were born, and continue to this day to perform at the Theatre.
Although there are reports of some ghostly going son, the Theatre is believed to be a very pleasant and friendly place. The current Board who run and own the Theatre have experienced cold spots, the feeling of being watched and even a figure of an elderly gentleman has been seen sitting in the dressing room.
Before the Theatre was renovated and new seats installed, there was one seat which often use to be down as if someone was sitting there.
Maybe the previous owner still continues to this day to watch over his Theatre, happy and tranquil that over the years it has performed and staged so many shows
